Demand for Secondhand Home Textiles (Quilts, Blankets, Mosquito Nets) from China Jinmao in the African Market
Let’s talk about the business of second-hand home textiles from China in Africa – items like quilts, blankets, and mosquito nets are selling like hotcakes there! The demand has always been strong and the sales volume keeps rising. The key lies in their high cost-effectiveness and practicality. West Africa, East Africa, and South Africa are the main markets. With the four major advantages of “low price, good quality, stable supply chain, and understanding local needs”, Chinese products have become one of the most mainstream imported sources in the region.
Africans have a strong demand for these second-hand home textiles – they need them all year round and will keep buying. The reasons behind this are quite practical:
Firstly, most of Africa has equatorial or tropical climates, with mosquitoes present throughout the year. Mosquito nets are a must-have in every household and there is no such thing as an “off-season”.
During winter (June to September), the temperature in highland areas and South Africa drops to 5-15℃, making thin quilts and blankets essential.
When it’s hot, breathable thin quilts and summer cooling blankets sell well.
In addition, Africa has a population of over 1.4 billion, with an average of 5 to 7 people per household. Each family needs to prepare several sets of bedding and mosquito nets. The local textile industry is not well developed, and over 90% of the goods have to be imported. The price of second-hand goods is only 1/3 to 1/5 of that of new ones, which perfectly meets the basic needs of the local people. The entire African home textile market can earn 6.5 billion US dollars a year, with an annual growth rate of 7.73%. Second-hand home textiles account for a large share. Chinese products can account for over 40% in West Africa and East Africa.
Let’s break it down by category for a clearer understanding:
Mosquito nets are absolute “hard currency” and sell well throughout the year. They have 150-mesh netting, are sturdy, easy to wash, and come in bright colors. The price of second-hand mosquito nets from China is only 1/4 to 1/3 of new ones, and they are in high demand in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and Tanzania.
Blankets are “all-rounders” with an extremely high repurchase rate. They are used for warmth in winter, as everyday items, for decoration during festivals, and to cover things to prevent dust. People prefer cotton or blended ones of medium thickness that are easy to clean and maintain. On average, each person consumes 5 to 7 blankets a year. China ships over 20,000 tons of blankets to Africa annually, and the price is only 1/3 of the local new ones.
Quilts and thin quilts have seasonal demand but their sales are steadily increasing. In places like Nigeria and Kenya, the peak season is from June to September. People prefer thin, breathable, light, and easy-to-store ones. Second-hand quilts from China sell quickly in these regions, and almost no one returns them.
The advantages of our Chinese goods are no exaggeration:
– **Unbeatable price**: They are 2/3 to 4/5 cheaper than new ones. Africans are sensitive to prices, and this price allows merchants to make a profit of 2 to 3 times.
– **Strong quality and compatibility**: They are cleaner and sturdier than those from Europe and America, and the sizes are more suitable for the local market, resulting in a much lower return rate.
– **Mature supply chain**: The process of recycling, sorting, and packaging is smooth, and they are classified into A, B, and C grades, with clear quality levels.
– **Inexpensive logistics**: The shipping routes to Africa are well-established, and the freight cost is relatively low.
– **High recognition**: African wholesalers and retailers all consider Chinese second-hand home textiles to be of high cost performance and reliable, and they have already built a good reputation.
The market distribution is also interesting: West Africa (countries like Nigeria and Ghana) is the largest market and can radiate to the surrounding areas; East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania) is growing the fastest, for instance, more than half of the blankets imported by Tanzania are from China; in South Africa, the demand is mainly concentrated in winter. Currently, the demand for second-hand home textiles is increasing by 10% to 15% annually, and the share of our Chinese products can still expand – but now it’s all about “whether they are clean or not, whether they are classified by quality, and whether the packaging is good or not”.
To sum up, second-hand quilts, blankets and mosquito nets from China are highly sought-after in Africa – the demand is strong, the prices are stable and the profits are high. With the advantages of price and quality, we have become the most mainstream source of supply in the local market. As long as we focus on core markets such as West Africa and East Africa, do a good job in sorting and cleaning, and optimize logistics, Chinese merchants can do a stable business that is “low-risk, sells fast and earns a lot”!
